October Course Report

I wanted to let you know how things are going and update you on our winter plan (that will take us to Christmas time).

What a month October has been!! Record temperatures have extended our golfing season. This season has been the longest I can ever remember! It does please me to hear the feedback on the golf courses although it has maybe put me a couple of weeks behind in project work. We are very lucky to have a well-drilled, hard-working and flexible team as we remarkably are still mowing grass late in the evenings to keep on top of things.

Last week I managed to get down my insecticide which will help with the chaffergrubs and hopefully prevent some pecking from the crows. I had to leave a little bit more grass on the greens for this product to be absorbed into the soil. With all that now done I have slightly lowered the height of the cut so we can roll out around 10 until we do our renovations from October 30th. We have had a great run on the greens this season and I will be doing all I can to match it next season. I hate to mention anything negative but I will soon have to start preparing the winter greens again!! These will be used when it's frosty or too wet! Also, the buggy route will come back out in November.

White Tee markers will also be removed on Monday 30th October and these tees will be rested until the clocks change in 2024.

The Driving range grass tee will remain open until the 1st week in November (exact date to be confirmed).

The Green Tee on Alliss 9 will also close down in the 1st week of November with the Green Tee markers moving to the Gold Tee. This will enable us to start moving the soil back to where the new tee will be.

China clay bunker sand will start rolling in from the second week in November and we will take the old sand out and put the new sand in immediately. We will be working on a hole-by-hole basis so we will have to use a temporary green whilst working in the greenside bunkers. I will update the course status as to our whereabouts.

Heather trimming will commence in the 2nd week of November and gorse removal is currently ongoing over both of our magnificent courses.

We have an intense winter programme this year so I am hoping for some hard frosts to enable us to pull off all this work.

We have made some good progress on the ditches this week and this will carry on to next week again.

The preparation and presentation of the golf courses always come first in my view and we will do everything we can to make your golf at Ferndown as special as we can.

Danny
