The Colonial Cup founded by Ron Dawson (Ferndown Golf Club) and Ted Debreceni (Cherokee Town and CC) is underway with the team of 8 Juniors, including 6 Juniors from Ferndown Golf Club and 2 from Parkstone Golf Club travelling out to Atlanta, Georgia USA on Sunday 26 July.

The competition format involves 4BBB, Greensomes and Singles matches played over 4 days on different course in the Atlanta area. Ferndown along with several other local golf clubs will host the return match in July 2016.

Our guys have got off to a good start winning the opening warm up 4BBB on Tuesday 3 & 1 at the Atlantic Athletic Club. They have coped well with their new environment as well as the 34 degree heat!!

Our thanks to all the members who have supported this competition through the clubs fund raising activities as well as the personal donations.

Report from Will Snelgrove, Junior Organiser (30 July 2015)

"The Golf Courses just get better, every day the boys say that this is the best course they have ever played. Atlanta Country Club was the next venue with our team once again having a successful day winning 6-2.  Most of the matches were close, three went to the last hole and were won with birdies. The boys have really gelled and are having a great time, including an 18th birthday party for Tom Atkins. "

Report from Will Snelgrove, Junior Organiser (31 July 2015)

The boys played Sittendown Creek today the toughest course yet with a par of 72 but with a slope rating of 77. Once again three of the  4BBB matches went to the 18th and ended two matches each so we only need to win 1 of the singles matches to win the Colonial Cup. Again there was some remarkable golf played with lots of birdies also lots of doubles and worse and lots of lost balls!

Alex Fernandez went eagle, birdie, birdie, birdie in the middle of his round and still ended up losing on the last to a birdie. Very hot and tiring today on a difficult course of over 7,200 yards, because of the heat nearly 100deg they have had buggies the previous two days but today they carried ( it was hot ).

As expected the boys finished the job winning 5/3 at Cherokee, final score being 16 1/2 to 7 1/2. The boys have done remarkably well in what even the locals say is unusually hot conditions, it has not been below 92deg any day with several days being around the 100 deg mark.

Tomorrow it's off to East Lake for the Neil Pike Testimonial Trophy, the boys will pair up with an American boy playing better ball on another Championship Course.

They will remember the trip for a long time not only for the golf they have played on great golf courses but also for the friends they have made.

Saturday 1st August

The boys finished their visit to Atlanta with a visit to East Lake the venue for the final of the FedEx Trophy on the 23rd to 27th September, also the course where the great Bobby Jones started his career.

The English boys were drawn with an American partner to play better ball against the other pairs and the two pros James Wilson and Ryan O Mahoney whose better ball score of 73 one over was beaten by 5 of the boys pairs ( they blamed it on not being able to putt ).

It was a great end to a memorable trip, with Tom Atkins and Robert Ghirardini winning by one shot with a three under par score of 69.

The boys have done remarkably well to maintain a high level of golf in extreme heat, another day in the mid nineties, I am sure they will be watching the final of the FedEx with keen interest and remembering the holes.

Members can log on to the Atlanta Country Club and have a look at the hole-by-hole photographs (with particular emphasis on No’s 6 and 13, which have to be as good a pair of short holes anywhere - Augusta included)
